The School of Health Dr. Lopes Dias (ESALD) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB), will hold a seminar on “Progeria: Pathophysiology and Therapies potentials, “led by Célia Aveleira, a researcher at the Foundation for Science and Technology in the Neuroendocrinology and Aging group at the Cell Biology Neurosciences Center at the University of Coimbra.
This initiative, aimed at ESALD students and teachers, has as main objectives to describe possible therapeutic strategies in progeria and its use as a study model for aging and for diseases associated with age. Participation is free, but registration is mandatory at https://forms.gle/K4vd58VY7KgokY3v6, limited to 100 participants.
The aging of the population is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. Knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying this process allows the development of new therapies to increase the quality of life expectancy. One of the strategies for the study of aging is the use of a model of Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, an extremely rare yet uncured childhood genetic disease characterized by premature and accelerated aging.
